Another BIG Thanks!!!

Friends and Family,

Thanks to all of you who have donated recently.  We have now raised $8,804.68!!!  That seriously chips away at the total cost of the adoption.  Kristen and I believe this adoption will be completed with perfect timing.  You are helping us get to that point, whenever it is.

Before I list the names of friends who have donated recently, there are two important points that should be noted.  First, there were multiple people and families from the 80's Fun-Run & Seminar that donated either anonymously, or did not realize to leave their name with us.  If you would like to have your name listed on this blog, shoot us an e-mail and we will add you the next time we update our donors list.  It is important for us to keep track of those who support us.  Second, Jason will be off the grid for a bit.  He usually creates the posts on this blog while Kristen does the real work.....raises kids.  That being said, please don't forget about us even though we are not updating the blog.  The adoption process will continue in spite of our online absence.  Now onto the important stuff.....

A BIG thanks to:

Joshua Davis- Kristen's high school friend

Tyler Jerrell- Old Merced friends

Damie Meyer- NGCSU friend

Bruce & Gina Flomberg- Friend of Jennifer Lamine

Happy 4th of July: A Marine Corps Adoption Story

Happy 4th of July Friends and Family!

This is a wonderful day to celebrate our freedoms, our country, and our fellow American.  We live in the greatest nation in the world.  This is a country where we get to make a difference, not just today, but for generations to come.  To honor this day, we want to share with you a letter written by a fellow Marine,  Lance Corporal Ries Murphy.  Ries serves with Jason at Company D, Marine Cryptologic Support Battalion at Fort Gordon, Georgia.  Ries has his own adoption story and reason why he serves as a Marine today.  He and his mother, Polli, are an example of the great American story....one that makes a difference and serves the greater good!

Written by: Lance Corporal Ries Murphy

One of the questions they love to ask you at boot camp is why you joined the Marine Corps. I’ve heard some great answers to that question and some not so great answers, and every other kind of answer imaginable that fell somewhere in between the two. In truth, my reasons for joining the Corps can be traced back to my origins, and therefore, to a woman named Polli Murphy. She is my mother, and in the end, my story is her story. None of this would have been possible without her honor, her courage, her love and her commitment. She was a true Marine mom from the very beginning.

As early as the recruiting station one of the questions you answer in writing is “Why did you join the Marine Corps?” I answered “I joined for my mother. Both of them.” My recruiter was slightly confused. I didn’t have to ask why. How could I have explained it properly? How could I have explained that I was born in Asuncion, Paraguay, and it was a miracle that I was sitting before him at that moment? How could I explain that I considered my country my other mother? Every life is a miracle, in its own way. It just so happens that most of us don’t see it.

When I heard that Captain Pon and his family were in hot pursuit of an adoption, I was enthralled. I am of the conviction that adoption is not only a good option, it is a truly miraculous opportunity. I hear so often horror stories of adoptions gone wrong, where the truth of the child’s origins are kept from them until a late age. This would of course result in turmoil - how could it not? I’m here to say that it doesn’t have to be that way. There is another route. My mother’s route.

For as long as I can remember, my mother told me the truth in a way I could understand it. “The woman who gave birth to you loved you so much that she gave you to me, so you could have the life she wanted you to have,” my mother told me. “I’m going to do the best I know how. You’re a miracle.” I’ve known from the beginning that my adoption story is one of love, and so when the inevitable jabs came later in life, I was able to face them. I didn’t face as much cruelty as some, I’m happy to report, and on the rare occasion that I did run up against ignorance, my mother gave me the material with which to push back against it.

Polli Murphy is walking proof that a single woman can be a terrific family. She grew up All-American, with a World War II father and a Rosie the Riveter mom. Even though I didn’t have a father, I still feel like she effectively duplicated that kind of house. Growing up, it was mom and me from the very beginning right up to the present day. From a very young age, I took my cues on courage from her - a single woman who worked as a parole officer on Manhattan Island, and yet somehow still managed to hide Easter Eggs, plant Christmas Presents, and steal teeth in exchange for shiny quarters.

My mother was one of the baby boomers, a walking piece of an era so many people in my generation have abandoned in lieu of blind cynicism. She told me from the beginning that I was lucky to be an American - that America was the greatest country in the world. “Americans can do anything,” she said to me when I told her I wanted to be an astronaut. “You’ve just got to work for it.” I think this is a message sorely lacking in the hearts of many Americans these days, which saddens me.

As a result of this young indoctrination, I grew up feeling that I owed this country for the many wonderful opportunities it offered me. I grew up with the belief that being an American was a true blessing, that I was lucky to be here. I think every American is lucky to be here, and I think there’s a consequent humility a lot of young people lack. Thus, in a strange way, the fact that I wasn’t born in this country gives me a very different appreciation for the very same things my peers might take for granted.

In my 23 years, I’ve traveled to over twenty one countries, won a National Championship for high school marching band, attended DePauw University and received my Bachelor’s Degree in English. I’ve lived on both coasts and driven the American South, North and West. I’ve seen the Sequoias, the Petrified Forest, the Grand Canyon and the Smokies at dusk. I’ve been to Disney World at least once a year since I was five, and always know the best place to get a burger. I knew New York City before and after the towers fell, and now I look forward to knowing it again. Next year I hope to pursue my Master’s Degree here at Fort Gordon, Georgia, which I hope can open a career in government work. I think, all in all, that I’m doing alright.

This is why I joined the Marine Corps. I joined the Corps because I was adopted, and since every Marine is adopted by the Corps, I figured I could grow my family a bit. I joined because my mother told me that I was an American and I could do anything I could dream. I joined because she told me that America was the greatest country in the world, that our people were the bravest and the hardest working, and that the defense of our country is the noblest thing we could do. I grew up aware that I owed this country and my mother for the life that I have enjoyed.

In the end, there’s only thing one left to say.
I love you, Mom. Thank you for Disney World.

Big hugs at Boot Camp graduation

Graduation from Boot Camp is a very moving experience for a Marine and his family.

An Anonymous Challenge

Friends & Family,

We hope you are doing great!  As we wait for the referral of a child, Kristen and I have had to focus on completing more administrative tasks: ordering original birth certificates, preparing our I-600A and our dossier.  All of this info is a mandatory part of completing the adoption.  We will post more about what the I-600A and dossier consist of later.

As we have moved along through this process, we have been introduced to new and old friends who have supported us.  To be quite honest, the outpouring of love has been both surprising and inspiring. Just recently, we have become close friends with a family who has a heart for adoption.  They are wonderful people and have offered up a challenge to support our efforts.   They have also asked to remain anonymous.  Please read their challenge below.

Our family has recently gotten to know Jason and Kristen Pon and discovered we share the same heartbeat with them for adoption.   We see what good parents they are with their biological sons and know that they will be wonderful adoptive parents. We strongly believe that the Lord has truly given Jason and Kristen this passion for the fatherless.  As our family has prayerfully sought the Lord in how best to help them, we were inspired by God to present a financial challenge to others. Therefore, we would like to challenge friends, family, and even strangers to respond to the Lord’s plan for the Pon’s planned adoption from Ghana.  So for every dollar contributed  between now and July 31, we will match dollar-for-dollar up to $1000.00. So if you have been waiting on supporting this worthy endeavor – answer the call now – and become a financial supporter now.  May God richly bless you for your compassion and love for the orphans of the world.

From Rich's Blog: Photo Update of My Recent Travels!

Hey Friends & Family,

I was thinking about finding some interesting facts about Ghana to share with you.  As I was searching, I ultimately found myself back at my brother, Rich's blog.  The great thing was, Rich lived it.  He knew the sights, smells, tastes, and sounds of Ghana while he lived there in 2009 as a foreign exchange student.  No better place than Rich's blog post titled "Photo update of my recent travels!"  to give us an idea about life in Ghana.  I went ahead and copied/pasted his post right into my blog.  Rich made this post on Friday May 1, 2009, which would have been the latter half of his exchange.  Enjoy!

Totally Awesome 80's Party!

Hey Family & Friends!

We hope you are doing well.  First, I will update you on the adoption progress.  Today we were sent the final draft of our home study.  It is an 11 page, 7000 word document about each member of our family, our parents and siblings, details about our upbringing, how we raise our children, our personal finances, our neighborhood & community, and recommendations about our ability to adopt.

With our homestudy nearly complete, our adoption agency, Adoptions Advocates International, let us know that we are OFFICIALLY on the waiting list for a child!  We are extremely excited about the progress we have made in just a few short months.  The next step is to wait for the referral of a child....and of course we will keep you updated!

With that good news, we would like to tell you about this "Totally Awesome 80's Party" we will be having on June 30th.  Most of you know that Kristen enjoys exercising and I enjoy martial arts and wrestling.  In the past two months, we started attending just that, a fitness center and grappling team.  Kristen and I have become friends with the owners of Three B Fitness and Grapplers Unlimited, Bonnie  and Brandon Cunningham.  After learning about our intent to adopt, Bonnie and Brandon offered to do a fun run and grappling seminar as a fundraiser to help us.  It is going to be a blast and we would love to see you there.  If you live in the CSRA or are interested in coming, grab your headbands and short-shorts and come out for the 80's Fun Run.  ****Please no short-shorts during the grappling seminar*****  :)

Thanks to all of you for your continued prayers and support!

Paracord Bracelets Now on Etsy

Hey Everyone!

Remember those cool bracelets my fellow service member, Sara Stokking, sold at our yard sale a few weeks back?  Well, they were a hit.  We have had quite a few requests for them since the yard sale.  Not only are the cost of the bracelets supporting our adoption, but they are unique and fun to wear.  There is a great red, white, and blue one that would be great for the 4th of July!

If you are interested in ordering these bracelets, Sara is selling them on Etsy at: http://www.etsy.com/listing/100011168/550-paracord-bracelet?ref=v1_other_1

Final Home Study Visit

C.J., Kristen, Jason, and Nate pictured with our social worker, Trisha during our third home study visit

Hey Friends & Family,

On Tuesday, May 1st, we completed our third home study visit.  Just a few weeks ago, our family went to Savannah, Ga to meet with Trisha for the first two meetings.  For the final meeting however, Trisha drove from Savannah to our home in Evans, Ga.  We expected Trisha to spend most of the day observing how our family interacts, but she actually only stayed for about an hour.  Trisha needed to accomplish two tasks during the visit: inspect the home and expand upon the risks, challenges, and rewards of adoption.

The home inspection was simple and fast.  Trisha walked through the home, paying particular attention to where our children's rooms are located and whether or not our fire alarms were in working order.  They worked...

For the remainder of her short visit, Trisha reviewed the risks associated with adoption.  The most significant risk she mentioned repeatedly was that we can be offered a seemingly healthy child, and upon our return with the child, he may have physical, emotional, or psychological health problems.  Though it seemed Trisha discussed this same risk from every angle, it was obvious she was wanting to emphasize the lifelong commitment to adoption.  In addition to that, she did share some helpful tips about adoption:

- Celebrate everyones differences.  Among the many challenges associated with adoption, we will face three broad ones.  The fact that we are an adopting family.  The fact that we will have an interracial family (although we already are).  The fact that we are adopting from a different country.  Though we are excited about our adoption, our family will be tested occasionally.   The various social interactions and experiences with people who may not understand our story will be challenging at times.  It will be important to celebrate the fact that every member of our family is different.  I particularly enjoyed Trisha's advice that when children ask questions about adoption, that we make it so exciting and special that they wish their own family was as unique and special as ours.

- Parental preference.  Apparently, most adopted children will start their relationship in a family with a preference for one parent.  Trisha mentioned that this is not unusual, but why it happens is not completely understood.  It could be that the child can only emotionally attach himself to only one parent at a time, or that the parent may remind him of a person he knew in his orphanage or foster home.  Time often balances this challenge.  Trisha also recommended that the non-preferred parent get to do ALL the fun things early on in the relationship.

- Educate the family.  Some of the more obvious ways to educate our family on adoption is by reading books or articles.  The more unique ways include finding groups associated with Ghana, participating in Ghana celebrations and holidays, and attending church with a Ghanaian population.  We also intend to keep our family connected to Ghana by travelling to Ghana in the years following our adoption.
